Walking past the sea shore you always try to throw away the entangled green mass around your ankles. Why do we suddenly care about growing them? Because you see we have reached a point in the climate crisis that even if we were to include all the “non arable” land in the world to grow trees- it would not reverse the situation any longer- this is called green carbon by the way. So we need heroes like seaweed that take 20x to 50x times more CO2 from the atmosphere than land based plants do.

As most of us prepare for the onset of winter (and lament the very short Autumn), it turns out that the seaweed farmers in England are preparing for their seaweed- seedling plantation. Laminaria SP and Saccharina SP are some of the species being cultivated. If you visit these farms towards end of January, you can see the flourish of life begin.

Did you know that Seaweed has been removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for at least 500 million years. Recent studies suggest that wild seaweed continues to serve humanity by sequestering 173 million metric tons annually. The average square kilometer of seaweed can capture more than a thousand metric tons.
